Paul studied at the University of Northumbria and was called to the English Bar in 1986.  He practised as a barrister in Newcastle-upon-Tyne between 1986 and 1998, then became an associate with an Isle of Man law firm.  He and his family moved to Guernsey in 2000 and he was called to the Guernsey Bar in 2003.  He is a member of Middle Temple, ACTAPS, the ELA and IBA.

In addition to his wide experience in civil and commercial disputes, Paul focuses on professional negligence and complex employment matters. 

Paul is recognised as a Leading Lawyer by Which Lawyer? for labour and employee benefits and is Highly Recommended for dispute resolution.  In the Legal 500 Paul has been commended for dispute resolution.  His is also well regarded for his trust litigation work, being “... very effective with a fairly relaxed, laid-back style which makes him easy to work with”.  He is also recognised for his medical defence work.  In Chambers Europe 2010 he is regarded as being a leader in employment matters, being "... a very good advocate with extensive hearings experience”.  The employment team having "...a strong reputation on the contentious side of the practice.  It continues to outstrip its rivals".   For dispute resolution Chambers Europe 2010 peers comment "... masters his brief very quickly - he was originally a barrister and it shows".  Chambers Europe also acknowledge his experience in his clinical negligence (for defendants).  In Chambers UK he has been widely commended for conflict work by his peers and is recognised as being “extremely impressive” by clients.
